(Out of School) Colour grading

Image
Colour grading The grading of a well graded image can often augment the sense of story within a scene or even completely transform it. Without the grading an image may look flat, boring, or even disjointed. As a photographer becomes more proficient at grading he or she can leverage the power of color tone to influence emotional tone within a scene. Grading at this level can transform an unexciting frame into a moment of cinematic magic. Therefore I wanted to learn how to do this, I watched these tutorials to learn how to do this with the software I already own.

(Out of school) Experimentation with premiere pro

Over the summer I wanted to make a video to carry on my experimentation to increase my confidence using premiere pro, this is the video I created whilst at latitude.

(Out of school) Slow Motion Practice

Image
Recently I watched a youtube tutorial of how to slow motion my videos in order to increase my technical skills within premiere pro and film making. Slow motion is an effect I want to use in my final video therefore I needed to learn it. I then went on a school trip to an art museum with the art department and decided to play around with my camera to see if I could successfully create a slow motion video. I was happy with the outcome and think it adds atmosphere to my video.

(Out of school) Projection and DSLR practice

In art I experimented with different ways I could change the visuals within my videos and messed around with some projections. This is what I created..

(Out of school) DSLR Filmmaking

How do I use my Canon 60D to create a high quality video? I wanted to do some research into how to get the best out of my camera to create a cinematic look for my final piece. I spent some time watching videos explaining each setting on the camera to help me achieve this look, I watched hours of videos to help me create the effects that I need. These are some of the videos I used. Short films made using a Canon 60D, the camera I am going to use : As we can see this short film relies on visuals created using different apertures to help create a beautifully lit piece of filmography. This film is filmed using a 30mm camera lens and as you can see the depth of focus is much shallower than the 50mm shown below. This film is filmed using a 50mm camera lens and as you can see the quality is much sharper with a better depth quality. How to use the correct settings on a Canon 60D

Post 50 - Feedback on your rough cut

After completing my rough cut I screened it to 12 people to gather there opinions and thoughts this is what I gathered Dave - “It’s so creative! the coloured lighting and use of the police is really mature for an ametuer film maker!” Liam - “So good! Elly and Edward are amazing, I can’t believe you got the police involved, those shots are stunning!” George - “Wow good on you for making two videos when only one is needed! maybe tweak some of the shots to stop the audience getting confused” Chloe - “ Aw the story line is so sad! gorgeous filming though, perhaps change the first video a little to make it flow better i only know what’s happened because i was there during filming!” Louise - “Gorgwohs music! Elly is so talented, you captured her music beautifully” Charlie - “Gorgeous but not my type of thing” Lucy - “i think you need to make some clips shorter because they linger too much, apart from that it’s great” Debbie - “The ending is so dramatic you don’t know if he’s g...

Post 49 - Rough cut

My opinion on the rough cut I think the rough cut is alright. I don't love it, I think there are some aspects I need to change, some scenes linger for too long and some scenes need better colour grading. The editing went well though and I had every piece of footage I could need a long with spares that aren't included in this rough cut.

Post 46 - Final song choice

Image
The idea for my coursework is that I want to do a music video in two parts, using Elly Bishop's new EP. Here are the songs I can find on youtube, as she has not recorded them professionally yet. Here are some of the videos on her channel.. Here are the two songs I'm using for my videos.. I wanted to use Ellys music because I think it looks fake and unbelievable when someone lip syncs with a song that is very obviously not their song. Using her own music makes everything seamless and more professional. She is also a close friend of mine which means I can ask her to be part of the video, even the main character, she can also bring in artistic views as she wrote the songs, she knows what the videos should be portraying.  Elly doesn't have any music videos as she hasn't even released her EP yet so I have nothing to work off with themes or consistency. this allows me to be as artistic and free as I want.

Post 43 - Final costume and make-up

Image
my costumes changed slightly, I decided to not have as many arguments therefore half the outfits were not needed but apart from that nothing changed. Elsie Charlie Images of the costumes Outfit 1 Outfit 2  outfit 3 Outfit 5 The reason I chose these outfits were because I don't have the budget to buy all new costumes, also the actors I used already had the ideal clothes for their characters, since this music video is going to be aimed at promoting Elly and her music as advertisement, it is a key influence of this music video to ensure that she wears clothes that she feels represents her, to form her own iconic look in clothes she feels comfortable in. Edwards character Charlie was always envisaged in my head wearing darker clothes, dark expensive clothes that he has bought using the money from his drug selling company. Elly would wear bright colours In the happy scenes, this aids colour psychology, where the bright h...

Post 42 - Final character(s) and casting

Image
No changes have been made to the script/stage directions/synopsis since the planning post so I am/we are working from that. I am still using.. Edward Pratt Age : 17 Nationality:  British Height: 6  foot 1 Eye Colour: green Hair Colour:  Browny blonde Acting Experience: Yes I always knew I was going to use Elly Bishop as the girl in my video, I have used her for several different pieces in the past shown here, these videos show how comfortable she is on camera and has been for a range of outcomes, therefore I used her as my Elsie, considering music videos are aimed at promoting the artist I figured the most effective way to promote the artist was to have the artist in the video..

On the day I change things slightly and added flash forwards of clips I had already filmed and planned, I wanted to show the end at the beginning therefore I hadn't planned this before video two

Post 39 - Final, Final idea based on all planning.

After all planning, my idea hasn't changed dramatically, only small parts of my plan have changed. Here is the final plan... The first video follows a young couple, as they arrive at a house and we soon realise they are at a house party, we then follow them into the party, throughout the first song, we see Charlie being hands on, rude and aggressive towards everyone.  We follow the couple through the party and discover Elsie feels very uncomfortable in her relationship, trapped. Charlie shows her off like a trophy to his friends, grabbing her and kissing her, getting drunk with his friends. Elsie sits uncomfortable and alone in the corner, avoiding drunken party goers as she searches for a missing Charlie. As she looks out the window she sees Charlie passing over a small bag to a friend.  Police car lights pull into the drive way, Charlie runs through the house grabbing Elsie, pulling her into a frantic chase. The whole way through this video it wi...
