In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The platform I have chosen to present my video and ancillary texts are Youtube and Blogger.

GENRE : Indie pop (also typeset as indie-pop or indiepop) is a music genre and subculturethat combines guitar pop with DIY ethicin opposition to the style and tone of mainstream pop music.

Genre INDIE POP conventions.

·     Relationship featured at some point in the video
·     Adult actors used
·     Artist performance OR narrative
·     Guitar featured in performance
·     Black and white filters
·     Mixture of camera shots, close and far away
·     Slow motion sequences
·     Most Indie Pop music videos includes a live performance from the artist which makes the audience focus on the talent the artist has. It makes their career about their passion for music rather than success. Live performances promote the artist/s too. This enables audiences to see the atmosphere the artist creates in their concerts encouraging the public to watch the artist/s live Performance is often partnered with a narrative to break up the music video thus, creating the music video memorable
·     Dialogue are often used in music videos either in the beginning or the end to tell or conclude the story.
·     filters are often used over the top of clips or the entire video to give a certain idea to the viewer, such as memory, age to the video or showing the clip in a positive or negative light

Conforming

For conforming to the forms and conventions of indie pop genre music videos I have conformed to my artist performing in a narrative performance, my video is based on a story line. The first video following a young couple at a house party, throughout the first song, we see Charlie being hands on, rude and aggressive towards everyone. We follow the couple through the party and discover Elsie feels very uncomfortable in her relationship, trapped. Elsie sits uncomfortable and alone in the corner, avoiding drunken party goers as she searches for a missing Charlie. As she looks out the window she sees Charlie passing over a small bag to a friend. Police car lights pull into the drive way. The whole way through this video it will be intercut with romantic clips from previously in their relationship, as well as fore shadowing the second video. During the chase between Elsie, Charlie and the police, Elsie trips over and Charlie leaves her on the floor. At this moment, she realises what she has gotten herself into, he isn't worth it. Charlie leaves in a police car and Elsie is left alone on the side of the road.

Having a storyline and not artist performance allows for the artist to tell a story with the music, the story they had in mind when writing the song, this goes in hand with the ideology behind Elly’s music. This also matches the genre conventions of relationships, most songs nowadays are written about relatable personal experiences, the most relatable experience is a relationship, sadly everyone has had a relationship that has gone wrong, or broken up.

Another convention I am conforming to is one of the main conventions of camera movement, I used many different angles and camera shots, including wides, close up, tilted and long. Slight slow motion is commonly used, and I am going to replicate this. I have chosen to do this, as it makes the video feel rather nostalgic and calming. My video is based on nostalgia and past events so this feel will improve the emotional attachment in my video. Finally, in music video, it is common to use narrative clips to interest and entrance the audience. In my video, there will be lip-syncing and commercial exhibitionism as well as a narrative plot over two videos.

Developing and Challenging

It is common in music videos, and most forms of media, to have a romantic relationship. This is how I've conformed to such conventions, as I am focusing on a romantic relationship. However, in mass media, the relationship is usually a negative one that is romanticised to make the audience think its okay. This is how many young people find themselves in toxic relationships as they are seemingly advertised by the media. This is something I think should be tackled to make young people realise that the media is romanticising issues and making these seem okay is in fact not ok. Although this is film, one example from my generation is the Twilight series, these films came out when I was 12 and portrayed an abusive relationship which young girls fantasised over for over 4 films.

Edward seems perfect. He’s attentive, caring and, to him, Bella is the only girl in the world. We all want someone that makes us think we’re the most special, gorgeous person on the planet. Nothing wrong with that – except, in this case, it’s full on manipulation. He stalks her, he watches her sleep, and then, when things are getting complicated, he completely abandons her until she feels compelled to put herself in danger just to get his attention. Bella is the equivalent of the girl who threatens to commit suicide to keep her boyfriend from leaving her, and Edward feeds right into it. This is not the kind of relationship that should be fed to teenage girls who know no better. My video plans to change the stigma around abusive relationships and violence to show how any form of abuse is not okay. I developed upon the typical conventions of relationships by twisting it to an unconventional Abusive relationship.

Another convention is that most famous professional music videos often have adult actors, this is seen as professional and I am using adults in the form of police officers but my main characters are teenagers, going against the general convention. This is because my story revolves around teenage issues and since my artist is a friend, I want to use some of her lip-syncing so I can incorporate that into the video so it makes sense that she is the main character. It then doesn't look dodgy when she lip-syncs as its actually her voice.

My video also challenged the stereostype of narrative OR performance, it featured Artist performance AND narrative, we have elly lip-syncing within this video, Most Indie Pop music videos includes a live performance from the artist which makes the audience focus on the talent the artist has. It makes their career about their passion for music rather than success. Live performances promote the artist/s too. This enables audiences to see the atmosphere the artist creates in their concerts encouraging the public to watch the artist/s live Performance is often partnered with a narrative to break up the music video thus, creating the music video memorable so there is a small aspect of performance mixed with narrative.

challenged the stereotype of featuring a guitar since when Elly first created these songs she played guitar but then after a while, she changed her song and had it professionally recorded and she changed the guitar for synth, so there was no need to feature a guitar. I also featured no sepia or black and white filters, which are often seen in indie videos, I chose not to use black and white because its seen in almost every student made video. filters are often used over the top of clips or the entire video to give a certain idea to the viewer, such as memory, age to the video or showing the clip in a positive or negative light But I wanted to create something different that was a mix between a narrative and plot, without all of the cliché editing techniques.

I also chose not to include dialogue in the beginning or the end to tell or conclude the story, I chose not to do this because the people I casted were not professional actors and I felt that if I included dialogue, the flat tone of voice would perhaps give it away that they were also young teens without professional acting experience.

What were you inspired by and why?
My music video idea has inspirations from some of my favourite music videos but also the songs that I am using, I wanted to create a music video for these songs that Elly has written, I personally love the songs and when I listened to them for the first time I had this idea form in my head of the story that the songs are telling us. Our main inspirations for the idea behind our music video come from already existing videos The first video which has affected the plot of my video is the music video, Bad things by Machine Gun Kelly and Camilla Cabello, also Robbers by the 1975. The plot lines for these videos are both based around a volatile relationship filled with arguing, yet intertwined with positive aspects of relationships. You can see there once was a joy filled relationship before everything went wrong, this is the most basic outline of my videos. The colours within each of these videos, the bold colours and dark tones contrasted with the lighter colours are something I wish to incorporate into my video.

MACHINE GUN KELLY BAD THING CLIPS

Two part music video inspiration
The piece of work that inspired me to create my two part music video is this trilogy of music videos that use one long plot line but with different songs that each develop the plot line further based on the songs used. I am to continue my video over two songs but use the songs to aid character development and story telling, in Elly’s song 'High time' the song repeats the lyrics 'so pass me another cigarette' I'm going to film my characters smoking. Each song represents something in the video, for example the first song is about loneliness which is where I'm going to have one long tracking shot of her walking around at the party showing how she is alone in a room full of people.

ANDREW GOODWINS THEORY ON ILLUSTRATION AMPLIFICATION
Andrew Goodwin stated that there were three different ways in which the music video can connect back to the song itself.
Illustration- Commonly used. Illustration is the simplest and easiest concept to base amusic video around as it is just a literal meaning to the song’s lyrics in visual form. Owl City have used illustrative ideas in their videos before, for example in Fireflies’ when the artist is singing and as he says ‘fireflies’ the word fireflies comes up on the screen to a little toy gadget.
Amplification is second. The conventions demonstrated by the music video creative director. They may use both performance and narrative, connotations of the meanings. An example of this is Kanye Wests homecoming where it does clearly show his home but the audience can work out that the song is homecoming and it is him walking around a city that he knows.
Disjuncture - Intentionally ignores the content of the song and genre of the music and tries to create a whole new set of meanings. These music videos don’t tend to make a lot of sense and can often use abstract imagery. In fat boy slims “praise you ”there is no relation from the video to the
