Post 27 - Planning- Setting

Setting

What is Setting?

You probably remember from grade school that the setting is where the story takes place, like the woods or Grandmother's house. Actually, the setting of a story tells the time, and place of a story and is told using techniques like imagery.

Time

When we talk the time in setting, we don't usually mean what time it is on the clock. The time of the setting is broader, like a period. The movie Star Wars is set a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, for example, and the story Romeo and Juliet is set in the past here on Earth. Time settings can also be an era, such as post-World War II or the gold rush days of the Wild West.

Place

The actual place a story happens is a little more straightforward. Most stories happen in several places, so when we identify the place of a story, the rule of thumb is to find the best way to describe where most of the story takes place. For example, in Star Wars the story is on many different planets; it would be most accurate to say the story takes place in space. In Romeo and Juliet, the characters interact in different houses and public places. It would be best to say the setting is in Verona, the city, instead of the Capulet or Montague family homes.

The 6 W's. When starting to create and describe a setting, start with the 6 W's. Its a good idea to answer to each of these questions to help develop a convincing and effective setting.

    • Where did the story take place?
    • When did the story happen (time of day/year/decade/era)?
    • What's the weather or climate like (the season)?
    • What are the social or community conditions?
    • What is the landscape like?
    • What special details make it clear to understand?

Settings in my video..

When

My video is set in modern day, years 2016/2017. My video is set in two-time frames- the present and a little in the past. However, even then, both scenes are set within a modern society. It is set in 2017, and the context is our contemporary society.

Season

The party is set in summer, whether as the romantic parts are filmed later in the year, during the winter and around Christmas. The romantic scenes are filmed throughout the year, to show how long their relationship has lasted and mainly during the day to allow for better lit filming. Whether as the chase and party scenes were filmed as though they were in the summer time.

Where

Kett's Park, Wymondham

I have previously used Ketts Park as a location in a preliminary, it went very well when I did the preliminary so I thought Kett's Park is a public playing field in Wymondham. It is an appropriate place to use because of its open nature, meaning there is a lot of room to move freely, allowing more freedom when setting up the camera to film. The openness and size of the field are also convenient because it means that people are less likely to interrupt filming because it's large enough to hold us and the public. Furthermore, it contains different areas to it.

For example it contains a forest and park. This is convenient because it means if we want to use various locations in the video, we don't have to travel far to achieve this effect.

On the other hand, this location may not be appropriate to use because it's a very popular place, meaning that we're likely to encounter pedestrians when filming, which may interfere with filming. Although since we were filming the police dogs at night I can't imagine we would encounter many people at 10pm on a Tuesday night. Another issue we may encounter when using this location is that it's very close to a road, meaning that we have to be careful when handling dogs because they're at risk of running off into the road.

However when I spoke to Rachel the dog handler she told me that as long as no other people were there it should be fine.

Cromer

I want to film some scenes on the beach, cromer Is the ideal location for these clips, this is because cromer beach has some incredible views, it has lots of options to film on the beach, in cafes, arcades and in October it would be quieter than usual as people only usually go to the beach in the summer therefore I don't have to worry about queues.

The pier has some gorgeous views and fits in with the bright colour psychology, bright colours to connote happiness. The location is also easy to get to and my actor Edward lives near the cromer area so is ideal. He can also drive us to specific locations. This location helps create the free and easy, happy lifestyle, no problems as of yet in the relationship kind of feel to the flash backs.

Blickling manor

Blicking manor also created the perfect feel free and easy kind of image, it felt comfortable and still, no chaos which perfectly juxtaposed the chaos of the party, the arguing and the chase. Blicking manor is on route home from cromer beach so I thought if I were to film in these locations then we could do them all in one and make a day of it. Perks of using this location is that if it were busy then it wouldn't affect the shots although this location is very weather dependent, ideally you would want to film on a nice clear day as to not ruin the camera or waste shooting time.

Elly's House

Ellys house will be used in some arguing scenes, this is because it will be the most convenient place to film them, it is an easy location to meet everyone at, it is only a 4 drive from my house, it also meant there were easy wardrobe changes as we were actually at the main characters house

Sam's House

I am using my friend Sam Hewitsons house as the party house, this is because his house is in the middle of nowhere effectively, this means he has hardly ever received a noise complaint. However he is still close to my house, a 10 minute drive, meaning all my extras should easily be able to get to the house. Sam's mother also agrees to me using the house and has helped other students out before, as well as hosting parties of their own.

The house is victorian and the whole bottom floor is attached, no doors and all open plan, this makes it so much easier to do all the tracking shots I had in mind which is what I was thinking of when I originally asked to use their house.
