Post 5 - Practice task research

To research our preliminary music  video, it is  important to gauge what our audience thinks  about music  videos, what successful music  videos are, and how they consume music  videos. To find out what they think, we decided to interview some different people, of different age ranges to investigate and research their thoughts. To get a good and even demographic we thought our age brackets should be: 10-29, 30-44, 45-60, and 61+. Also, we think that because we don't quite know yet what target audience our practice music video will be aimed at, this can be a good excersize to assess and see what ours may be. LR

Post 4 - Practice task planning

Potential Settings:  Kett's Park This is where we decided to film our preliminary task. Towards the back of the field, there is a large area of forest. This is where our characters meet, and fall in love. We chose this area as it is quite picturesque, and logically, makes sense for the story (they meet whilst walking their dog, and this is a popular dog walking area). Later on in the video, we are planning on showing them at home, perhaps arguing. For the house, we will use Megan's living room. We will focus more on the relationship, and the action, so the room will just be generic. The forest will be bright and beautiful, which will become a stark juxtaposition compared to the house. This will further portray the breakdown of their relationship, and how happy they were together, which will evoke sadness. Potential Costumes and Props: As our preliminary is set in modern day, and is realistic, we have decided to use ordinary clothes. There may be a costume change...

Post 3 - Student made music videos

Pre-Existing A-Level Music Videos To extend my research on music videos for my preliminary task, I will analyse previous media studies students' work. This will help me with my coursework because it helps me to see the kind of things the exam board specifically want as opposed to the professional music industry. Furthermore, it provides inspiration for my own coursework. 'Stuck' - Canopy Climbers (Henry Nathan) Editing The editing of this video is quite generic. They tend to opt for shorter takes to suit the pace of the song, as long takes wouldn't suit the bounciness and repetition. A technique they don't use is cutting-to-the-beat. This choice was effective because the song doesn't really have a defined beat, meaning that cutting to it would be pointless because the purpose of cutting-to-the-beat is to emphasize the beat.  The student also chose to use cross-cutting between different scenes. This is used to create a balanced look, rather than play...

Post 2 - Professional music videos

This music video was released in 2016, and was made in conjuncture with Warner Bros. and DC to promote the film " Suicide Squad ". (coincidentally, an example of  synergy .) The music video takes a darker, more gritty tone compared to other twenty one pilots music videos, which typically take lighter and more fun tones. This is probably done to match the lyrics of the song, saying things which would be considered quite sensitive subjects or more twisted. Lines such as "you're laughing at the psychopath sitting next to you" and "doesn't mean our brains will change from hand grenades" support this explanation. Also seen in the music video is scenes from the movie it's promoting, Suicide Squad. Typically, these are small shots of the characters, e.g. Harley Quinn treating her baseball bat like a gun, various shots of Killer Croc, etc. This was done to show some kind of link between this song, the music video, and the movie. It also helps...

Post 1 - Our practice task explained

Image
My group (Megan, Noah, Wendy and I) were randomly given a fairy tale or nursery rhyme, and a question. We were tasked with creating a music video relevant to one of the stimuli given. The fairy tale we were given was- 'The boy who cried wolf'. The question we were given was 'What if you said yes to everything?' After discussion, we decided to choose the nursery rhyme (the boy who cried wolf). This was because we initially had more ideas for this stimulus, and felt we could develop an interesting music video. This is our original mind map for this idea: Potential song choices: 'Running with the Wolves'- Aurora:     This was one of our first choices. We liked the song, and felt it was relevant, but in the end, decided it was too dark for our new idea.  'The boy who cried Wolf'- Passenger.     For our first idea, we decided to use this song. It was our first choice as it suited the themes and emotion of our idea. It is sad, but not over...
